sorry if im a complete idiot but i just wanted to know how the front windows are connected to the regulators. my '66 square has both regulators and they seem to be in good working order, possibly twisted just a little, but nothing major. the glass has the piece on the bottom but it looks like its messed up. do i need to replace those pieces? what are they called? where can i get them?

so is the track that is attached to the glass messed up? if so you could probably either replace the track but theyre hard to take on and off so it might be easier to just replace that whole door glass with one that has a good track on it.

It's been a while since I've looked in there but I think on all vw's the door glass is held into the channel that bolts to the regulator with glass seating tape, that rubber stuff that fills the space betwen the metal and glass. It is hard to get the channel on and off the glass, especially if it's old and firmly in place but if you have the channel and glass all you would need is the seating tape, you can get it at any glass shop and they practically give it away. Fold the rubber strip over the glass, set the channel on top of it and tap it down with a rubber mallet or chunk of wood and a real hammer. Or have the glass shop do it for you.
oh, and you may have to take out the vent wing to get it all back together... |

There usually is a clip (shaped like 2 triangles laid sideways) that gets broken and causes the widow to not work correctly. This clip slides in the track at the base of the window, and if it (the clip) is still intact, then just grease the track and reassemble. If the clip is broken, you'll need to replace it. I have some good door glass (with very nice tracks) for sale in the classified section, along with the door glass regulators (68 and later). Or you can contact www.theddb.com for them. I hope this helps.

ok, so my drivers side window is now completely functional thanks to all your guy's help. i need a new channel however for the passanger side. the clip is still fine thankfully. are channels specific in any way (model, year, side) ? are they hard to come by?

No, they're not "side specific". Try and find one from the southwestern states if possible, as they are most likely to be free of rust. Those that I have advertised are from Texas, very clean and still black in color. This is what you want for your own car.
