There is no way that sand in the Audi thread is real... nobody could possibly be that stupid and an engine wouldn't pump twelve pounds of sand before it finally quit running. Somebody posted that and then proceeded to laugh his ass off for a good long time. |

Put more than 9ft lbs on the oil strainer bolt....This didn't kill her though. With help from my dad, some Loctite, and a little ingenuity she lasted 17,000 more miles....until I took the tin off to paint it and make the engine all pretty.
Now I have a new engine and a lot more appreciation for torque specs and the cooling system. |

I once took advice I got on thesamba from someone who had never performed the actual maintenance in question.
Remember kiddies, just cause they're here and have and opinion doesn't mean they know their ass from a hole in the ground.

| On the way to smith rock for some climbing, and doing a u-turn in a driveway. While trying to negotiate the last wee bit and avoiding a ditch. The passenger side front wheel became suspended in mid air. Because me and my passengers weight was up front... in slow motion.... the bus starts tipping ever forward into the ditch raising the back end right off the ground. I turn to my buddy [who is freaking out] "dude, quick climb into the back over the engine". He does, and this puts the back end back down to earth. I backed up and out of the precarious spot with a smile, while my ashen faced passenger gave me the stunned stare as the journey continued. |

| A couple weeks ago i was getting ready to do some routine maintenance on my 73 westy....popped the engine door to unhook the battery, but for some reason i put my wrench on the hot side and gave it a good turn swinging my nice craftsman wrench right into the underside of the engine compartment. Welded the bugger right to the bus and toasted my battery....oops! |

| Over the Christmas/ New year holiday week I dropped the engine and transaxle out of my new-to-me 78 Westy to install a new clutch and seals. After installing and removing the engine 3 times because of issues with the new clutch and the pressure plate I finally got it back in and cranked it up, only to see blue and green flames shooting out of the alternator because I forgot to connect the ground strap. |

About 5 years ago, in the middle of january, here in maine, we had a january thaw. though the ground was covered in ice and snow, the temps got near 50. i decided to do something outside to cure the cabin fever. give my 78 riviera bus a tuneup! this bus was mint. no rust anywhere. 83k miles, 1 owner. my only complaint is that there was not much work to do on this bus, as it was so complete. i proceded to put the wheel chocks under the wheels, do adjustments, and listen to the bus purr. everything was nice. i turned the bus off and went inside. a few hours later, i heard a whoosh-thud. i went outside and looked around for the cause of that strange noise. i dont see anything. wait, I DONT SEE ANYTHING! the bus is gone! where is it. i look around. no where. then i get a sick feeling in my stomach. i look over the bluff on the edge of the property, over the stream... there is my bus, 30 feet down, sitting on its nose in the ice of the stream! well, several hours later, after several failed attempts with a wrecker, the bus was back in my driveway, flat in the front, driver side scraped front to rear on a maple tree, rear bumper ripped off from the tow truck! well, i got my wish... i now have lots to do to fix on this bus!
the bus had rolled from the wheel chocks kicking out, as the ice under them melted in the rising temperatures. not to mention, i had left the bus in neutral, from running it during the tune-up.
so how many lessons can i learn from this incident? |

The biggest mistake I made was buying a VW bus and thinking I would be able to drive it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so fed up. Maybe I should sell it. I did get about 10 miles in four months. Totally Awesome, Dude! |

Or a lot of love. Once it's back in good condition it won't let you down. |

I have spent so many hours trying to get the darn thing to take me around. The good thing is I have learned so much from all the problems I have encountered. Even after all this knowledge I have learned I am still hoping to find the answers to get her running good.

| I month ago I had what seemed like a vacuum leak at the base of the carb. It looked to me that the carb flange on the intake was not flat, so I tore a small piece of a red rag a put it down the intake to keep the metal shavings out as I filed the flange flat. I took a few times of putting the carb on and off again trying to match the carb base to the intake and I was careful to make sure to pull the rag out each time I put the carb on. Then after it was back together the last time I could not find that piece of rag! I was convinced I had let it in the intake! Even though the motor was running fine I was sure I could smell it burning in the exhaust or something. I could not rest until I had pulled the the whole intake off and looked down in the the heads. Still no rag. Arrrg! I have no idea what happened to it, but I am sure it's not in the engine. |
