Quote: We got a bag of sandblasting sand and hooked up into the intake and started the car. We had to hold the gas so it would run. He wanted to let the engine suck in the sand through the intake so it would port it out and then push it out the ehxaust so it would port the exhaust manifold.

The comments are priceless

i was wondering if tha kid was going to post n here but if you read the og thread he still defends that as an ok thing to do, as well as a few others, i have nothing against seafoam but that kid was just crazy with it.....but i digress i do not want to get involved with that conversation again!lol

I like the advice given to him to fill the case with water

Hope the moron doesn't reproduce and further contaminate the gene pool...

from the chocolate syrup thread:

water in crank case:

I guess sand is better then water  I can't get over that sand going through that engine.

Reminds me of the time many years ago on rec.motorcycles when someone asked the best way to change their oil. One of the resident pundits gave him an elaborate procedure involving draining the oil and then filling the crankcase completely with mineral spirits to "clean it out".

Lets see now...it all started of simply enough. Read on the engine forum that 34 ICTs really should have a balance tube connected to them, and thought, hey, that's a simple enough job I can do myself. Since I was at my friend's shop putting in the tyres, hey, why not...he's got all the tools I need. Heck, what did I need? A screwdriver? The bus is parked halfway into the shop and the weather's beautiful...what the heck, I love the sun.

Bought some heater hose (5/8ths) a plastic tee and lotsa clamps. Took out the plug from the right carb, put in the hose...hahahaa...so easy this job!

Pulled out the old one, disconnected, discarded then put in the half-inch Tee into the 5/8ths hose. For some reason, tight as bloody hell. Did it! Now remove the old hose from the left carb elbow. Geez...that bugger is TIGHT!! Finally got it out. Crap, the thing looks like 1/2 inch. Never mind. I've got clamps. Put new hose in easy fit. Clamp it tight. Now remember I said the bloody Tee was tight in the hose. Well, try jamming it into the Tee now that you've got 2 inches to grip in the left corner of the engine bay, with an eberspacher in your face. This is from the top mind you.

Snap!! The bloody elbow comes off in my hand. Ah heck, I can jam a shorty screwdriver in there and screw the remains out now, can't I? After all, its bloody plastic. After an hour of cursing swearing, my mechanic buddy says, just take the carb out. Geez, never done that before! Nothing to it, he says. So I get to work. Damn, that sun is getting hot!!

So two bolts out, yaay...was that all there was to it? Twist it around (cos I can't figure out how to remove linkages) and lay it on its side. Take out the manifold. Crap! There's other bolts underneath there? Took those off. Dropped one nut into the manifold. The whole block must've heard my eff word. Don't worry my buddy says, we got magnets. Yaay. fished it out.

So no elbow. Through a curious collection of weird hoses and a brass connector, I manage to fix it all back. By this time, I HATE the sun. The bottom nuts on the manifold are hell putting back. Whoever said taking out carbs is easy (my mechanic buddy) is nuts.

Funny how these things all start off with, oh, that's an easy job?

LOL!! one guys says "What you need to do is take the engine out of the car, stand it at a 90 degree angle to the ground, start it, and let it shake all the sand out. That should do it." I almost spit out my flipping beer!!!!HAW HAW HAW!!!

The week after a fresh paint job, I backed out of the garage with the driver side door open.

Luckily, didn't break the window (it was open) or hurt the body. However, tore the garage door rail off, and skewed the window frame on the bus into a flattish parallelogram.

I used a come-along to wrench the door back into shape. Now the door closes fine, but I just cut my losses and painted the bits of kinked metal with Tremclad.

lol, er ouch, this keeps happening to me. my garage is *just* about an inch too low- and if i absentmindedly back the bus out with the back hatch open... really screwed up the back hatch on my camper, knocked the automatic garage door off its tracks (ever try to get one of those back on?). oh ive done it more than once too. ripped the trim off the garage door opening another day.

the back hatch on my new bus *was* pristine... i've left it open while working on the engine and was able to open/close the garage door no problem... till one day i jacked the bus up to install engine, left it jacked up and closed garage door. i now have a nice paint scratch on my pristine door.

Paid my mechanic $60 to tell me I was out of gas.
But who would guess you would run out of gas in your garage. :)

Paint screw-ups... I have a few of those!

A week or so after a new paint job I was tweeking my antenna hole with a file... slipped with the file and put a 2-3 inch light scrape in the paint. Barely made it through to the primer but still... I really should have checked that fit BEFORE the paint job!

Maybe a week or two later... was filling up with gas and went to open the sliding door on my '71. Oops; forgot that you can't fully open the sliding door on an early Bay with the gas flap open!! Two small scratches on my gas flap; not so bad. (my first Bus was a '69; then a '73 then '77)

Then... few months later; was drilling a hole though the inner body skin in the rear for a subwoofer power line. Forgot to slow down or put a stop on the drill bit and thus went through to the outer body skin just below the rear window... didn't drill through it but I put a bump in the paint and a few tiny cracks. Very small again - whew!

I just remembered another paint screw-up... on my last Bus. Oh yea - and another. First one was trying to paint a Bus in a garage with a wagner power sprayer. Those things are loud.

Second time I went with an HVLP my company used for work occasionally. Worked great for the epoxy primer but guess I didn't clean that epoxy out well enough 'cause it didn't work so well for the topcoat... or ever after...
