Pulled into the garage last night with my 68 Square and smelled gas. Looked underneath and was dripping fuel. Evidently I split a fuel line.

Question - are the fueld lines metal or braid? Will fuel line from one of the auto stores, i.e. Auto Zone, work, or is it unique to VW?

I am jacking it up this afternoon to find the leak and replace the line, just wondering if I am in for any surprises.

I would recommend the actual fuel line that a VW parts store would supply. I beleive it is a "braided" type line.
Not all of the system is soft line though. There is a section that runs from the front to the back of the car that is metal.
While you are replacing some of the line, I would suggest replacing all of it while you are at it for safety purposes.
And while you are under there, make sure you don't get gas in your eye. It BURNS. Might even recommend wearing safety googles when removing the line.

I've had good luck with ISP and CIP for stuff like this. Additionally, I'd use clamps on all the points where the flexible line hooks up to solid line - VWs being known for leaking fuel on to hot engines. Also, don't forget a clamp on the vent line up on the gas tank...

Well it turns out that the broken fuel line was not a broken fuel line. My 68 has been converted over to dual carbs. The fuel return line for the fuel injection system was left in place but plugged. Turns out that the plug simply fell out. Put another in, with a hose clamp for good measure. Should not be a problem again.

Thanks for everyone for their replies.
