Didn't the guys at shop talk help you out?
Well, it's an involved conversion but not too difficult if you have all the parts - trans, flywheel, clutch assy, motor mounts, pedals, shifter, cables. Check to see if you have the clutch cable tube in your auto pan, sometimes it was installed at the factory even on automatic models. If not you will have to cut up the pan to install one, a whole new topic. The rest of stuff is bolt on, remove the auto stuff and install the stick. Replacing the flex plate with a flywheel involves retorquing the gland nut and of course checking the end play. Might as well replace the main seal too while you are there.
Have you heard this before at shop talk?
Do you have specific questions?
Would you consider selling the auto and buying a stick square? It would be a lot easier, and cheaper if you have to buy all the parts or pay someone to do it. |

Bobnotch and the boys helped out quite a bit :D
But just seeing if any other aadvice over here .
Im pretty sure i dont have a shift tube in the tunnel , there is a empty black fuel return tube down there . That wouldnt happen to be a shift tube would it ? . Its about a 1/2 inch thick .
As for selling the car and finding an auto i cant . $$$ aint flowing .
I got the square for $150.00 and got it going with some elbow grease . With 3 kids i cant spend much on it but i have all the parts from 69 and up bugs waiting for me .
Theres a site about sliding in a shift tube out there without cutting up the pan , Volksaddict , what was your thory. Would it be best to get a hydraulic clutch??
Thanks guys :P |

| 1/2" tube? sounds pretty big for a gas line, might be your clutch tube. The only way to know for sure would be to see if it ends up by the pedals, or compare it to a stick shift car. I'd do the clutch tube over the hydraulic clutch if it were me, especially if I didn't have the hydraulic clutch stuff laying around. You can slide the tube in from the back but you still have to attach it to the pan at the pedals and in the middle by the e brake, nothing too dificult. Bobnotch knows his stuff so you should be well informed. Good luck! |

Yes, when I read this last night I thought the 1/2" tube might be a clutch tube. The big question is, is it on the left side of the tunnel? If it is, then you got lucky and got an AT pan that was set up for both. Some 69's were like this, but not all of them. The next thing you need to look for will be an access hole on the bottom side of the pan so you can install the shift rod coupler (t-3s are on the bottom, while bugs are on the top). You should be able to use a later style type3 shift rod and bolt on shift rod support (w/ bushing, but this might be a little harder to find on the Islands, so try the ddb for this part), and convert the pedal assembly. The pedal assembly is the same as a bug, so this will help you find one. You'll need to hunt up a 71 and earlier bug bowden tube, and get a type3 specific sized clutch cable, as they are slightly longer than what a bug uses. I hope this helps.
P.S. Thanks for the compliments. :D |
