Hello Everyone

I'm in the process of putting together my (Feb 1953) 1500 super and was looking for good pics of the 1500super engine to use as reference.

I'm not sure if I have the correct tins or not....car came with a mix of 2pc and 3pc parts, .........now I'm trying to make sense of it all.

I need help/info/details on the correct sheet metal for these motors.

Thanks :D

Maybe this will help:

Some tin shots in there. The engine labeled 1500N actually looks like it has S carbs/linkage/manifolds.

Yes I got that Link from Mr. Okrasa....he rebuilt my motor and trans.. now waiting for him to finish my carbs ...everything so far looks top notch!

The tins in the normal album are for a normal engine. The sides get modified for the super manifolds. Both Mr. O and Allan(samba member) have provided pics ...... Thx guys :)

I'm interested in the specifics part by part so I can document this info for the 356 registry and the samba for whoever else wants or needs it.

Does anyone have or has seen a 1500 or 1500super fan shroud that has not been modified for the oil filter? and a 1500super fan shroud that left the factory with the oil filter?

I'm trying to confirm two scenarios, and if anyone knows when exactly they made the addition.

1-cars that left the factory without the the oil filter had the oil filter mounted using self tapping screws. Location will vary slightly depending on who installed it, and was mounted using a wider mounting strap included with the filter.
2-Cars that left the factory with the filter used threaded screws to secure it to the fan shroud. Position is identical car to car.

Thx :D

Hello,
I do not know the answer to your question but I had a 1500N (54 build, MD 53) that was original and without any filter (engine type 546). As I'm putting together also a 1500 S I'll like to know the results of your investigations. Thanks

Bunch of pics of a just new 53 coupe here, including a few engine shots:

I would be really interested in original photos too. My car is a mid-1953 1500S coupe as well, but the 528 engine ran off long ago. It has a 546/2 in it now, but I'm not sure if the tins and ancillary items I have are from the original 528. It would be great to see some detailed photos.

There are photos of 15111, a late '52 1500S cabriolet without an oil filter here

And some photos of 60540, an Apr '54 1500S cabriolet with an oil filter with narrow strap here

If yours is Feb '53, It's probably closer to 15111.

There's a photo of engine P-40705 in the opening pages of the '54 Factory Service Manual. That engine was produced sometime in early '54 and has the wide strap.

Charlie White's photos of the '53 1500S is of a late '52 or early '53 car.

So from the above, I would say provisionally:

- early Supers didn't have a filter from the factory. You could install whatever.
- some Supers had Fram F-3 filters with the narrow strap. Lids were smooth in '53
- F-3 filters in '54 and '55 were 3-D, but strap and canister the same.
- Some cars in early '54 came with Mann filters with the wide strap.

But obviously we don't have enough information.
