I have A 1971 superbeetle and can,t get the fresh air fan to work . I see the two knobs to open it up but can't find anything to turn the fan on. right next to the brake light in the center of the dash is an empty hole that looks like something was there at one time but I don't know what it was for, help me please.

Wish I could help but the 79 is different from the 71. Do a search in this forum because someone was asking that question just about a week ago.

go to the fan.. and trace the wires.. there should be 3 of them.. as for the switch, i never could find it.. and one was never hooked up.. so i just rigged up a switch and mounted it under the dash. i have a 71 super too.

i didn't know my '73 super had a fan :? i have 2 twisty knobs to open the vents (one is stuck) but i didn't think the beetle was luxurious enough to have a fan, i think having an interior light is a luxury :P

That "empty hole" in the dash is where the fresh air fan switch is supposed to be! It's a two speed, rotary switch. You could always mock one up as a replacement.

Ditto to what "Lstregis" said.

I'm a 71 Super owner, and that hole is where the switch is supposed to be.

I probably have some swithces and fans laying around in my stuff.

the 71- 72 fresh air box had the fan inside the box... the 73 and later it ( the blower fan) is behind the metal cover under the hood where the wiper motor is hidden.

I dont think its worth hooking up. I have one never use it. The thing is just really loud but you cant feel air. Windows were always the way I went screw that fan thing.

I use it in hot weather even with the top down. It really does help. I also use it when I need to defog the windshield because one of the ducts leading from the engine heater boxes is blocked somewhere front of the door and the fan sends air from the vents in front onto the windshield.
