The 4 speed in my 68 Squareback whines in second and third gear when you are accelerating. It is not a growl, grind, or any other noise, it is a whine. When you let up off the gas pedal the whine stops.
The gearbox operates fine, shifts smooth (relatively speaking for a VW), and stays in all gears, no popping out of gear. Recently had the fluid level checked and the gearbox has the required amount of fluid.
Any ideas?
I have had people tell me that it is a pinion gear bearing. If so do I have anything to worry about? |

Okay let me ask in a different way, since no one is responding to my post.
Does anyone else have this whine from their gearbox? And if so, how long have you had it, and are you worried about it?
Oh please, someone respond.
 |

| It's hard to say without hearing, it but a whine from the tranny probably means a bearing is going out. I wouldn't be too worried about it though. VW trannys ussually last a long after their first signs of wear. |
