My lovely and talented Mrs. is concerned that there are no shoulder belts in my newly resurected '67 Fasty...I have the retracting lap belts that hook to the bracket in the center, and I do have the mount plugs on the roof pillar for shoulder belts. Anyone have a source for adding on shoulder belts; and are they compatible with my current ones, or do I have to get all new seat belts?
Thanks! |

| Have you tried the usual suspects? WolfsburgWest.com, CIP1.com, JCWhitney? Although we're talking Type 3 and I never see Type 3 things in those places, maybe you can still use the seat belts they sell. |

| Fastmatt, thats funny you say that, my "better half" thinks the same about my notch. I just tell her that VW didnt make it that way, and if she doesnt want to ride in it, then so be it. Hint... it keeps 'em out  |

I beleive that you have to get new seatbelts. Contact Martin with the DDB. He parts out type 3's all the time and I am sure that he has a set laying around that he will sell.

| I replaced the stock shoulder belts in my 1970 Squareback with a set of new retractable ones from CIP (C16-111-707BK). I used the stock mounting points on the tunnel and under the B piller in front of the rear seat. I also used the stock mounting point for the shoulder swival on the B pillar. I had to drill a hole under the rear seat box between the heater vent and the edge of the seat box to mount the retractor on each side; it fit nicely. I also had to modify the support washers that were supplied by cutting them to fit under the read seat, to clear a ridge and get a flat mount. The washers are nice and big to work in the event of an accident, about 3" accoss. If you are interested, I can post some pics on my web page. |

Yeah, if you could post a couple of pictures, that would be great. I'm kind of surprised, however, that so much effort has to go in to something that must have come as an option - otherwise, why would VW go through the effort of drilling the mounting holes and covering them up on the roof pillar? Everett, do you have any historical insight here?
Thanks, |

| While seatbelts were an option i must agree that they are a good idea. A shoulder belt was the only thing that kept my face off the windshield when i got in a wreck. |

| OK, I added some pics to the Interior page of my Web page that shows how my installation turned out with the new retractable shoulder belts. These are not the only ones out there, but I liked their appearance. |

| You know that big, white plastic screw in the side pillar under the strap? If you take it out you have a mount for a shoulder strap. 3-point belts from a later Type 3 or Beetle will bolt right in. (You'll have to change the mounts on the tunnel, too.) End of problem, and you can keep the original belts with the car in case you want to undo it and put it back to original later. You could get 3 point belts as an option on Type 3s in Europe even in the 60s. Mercedes had them as standard equipment beginning with the Finback models. I think VW was trying to keep up. NOW you know why those huge plastic screws are in the pillars! |
