It's a 71. The previous transmission was found in a junkyard by my then mechanic. I got 8.5 years and nearly 60,000 miles out of it so I really can't complain.

I think it is 4.12 ratio or something in 4th - whatever the traditional gearing should be. Maybe I'm a dummy for not remembering but I've got too many things to remember already!

I was talking with Rick Long at Long Enterprises about some parts and he told me he rebuilds 091 transmissions for $800-1100. I haven't given him one to actually put it to the test. I'm starting to wonder what goes into $499 transmission just as cheap engine rebuilds cost $1100. Rick said he uses German seals, gaskets, etc. so I guess Chinese bearings lower the cost?

He also said a few other interesting things. The plastic ball joint in the nose cone lasts longer for street use than the steel replacement designed for racing.

He said transmission life depends too much on the driving habits of the owner. For the 091, the averge life span is 150k miles up to 200k. He has seen transmissions go more than 200k but it's a very rare occurence.
