I have a 71 squareback FI. I have been having an overheating problem so I wanted to check the timing. This is what I have been doing;
Static time at 0 degrees(the notch furthest on the left)
test light hooked up to the coil where the condensor wire is attached.
Distributor at the #1 mark
With test light grounded the closest timing that I can get is that the light goes OFF when it passes TDC(clockwise) without moving the distributor some insane amount of degrees.
Shouldn't the light come on at TDC? Do I have this all hooked up right?
Thank you for the help |

| I suppose it doesn't matter anyway, its still heating up and leaking oil something fierce, the motor is suicidal I think and the 3/4 side valves don't really adjust.....I have enough vw work for the next 400 weekends, I think I'll just rebuilt it if I get ambitious......at least the bus runs(knock on wood) |
