If mine I would look in the classifieds for a set of original type 3 dual carbs and swap it over.

The Type 3 uses an early Bosch system upon which all current FI systems are based. IMHO, too many people are scared of FI. Me, I'd never have carbs on a car again.

Take your car to a VW dealer, or any general mechanic with the right equipment, and get your FI system cleaned. Even on American cars it runs about $150 and should be done every 50K miles or so.

If there are still problems, I think Bill and Steve's sells new injectors. After 34 years, I think they could stand to be replaced.

You could try replacing the fuel lines at the injecters and flush the lines of the crap while it's apart but if the system has sat for too many years it can be next to impossible to get all the jelled nasty deposits out of the system. To me it's all a matter of how long it has sat as to if it's worth leaving FI.
