Engine is not original to the car, was installed in late 1963 as an exchange engine. So it spent a lot of time in the car, but it is a modern 40 horse with heat exchangers and heater hoses. I already have all the parts to dress it up as a correct early 40 horse stale air engine.

Very clean '61...congrats!
Curious if you have the different style snowflake pattern on your taillights?...

1961bluebug Fri Sep 06, 2013 6:14 am

Thomas: yes, I believe M018 diamond shaped tail lenses in place of snowflakes.

Ditto!

Need to paint the VW logos on the hubcaps. Otherwise just about perfect.

Is that KM Counter magnetically held on? I see it above the visors and also above the radio. Love the car. A real Gem from what I see.

1961bluebug Wed Oct 23, 2013 7:33 am

Yes, the counter was held on by ferrit magnet, but I suppose it got weak during years so I changed it for neodym magnet. I relocated it from the dash near the mirror so it doesnīt get in way of my hand when turning the lights or wipers on...

Is the steering lock also an ignition switch ?

1961bluebug Fri Oct 25, 2013 4:23 am

If I understand it correctly the basic equipment was the switch on the sdash near the ashtray. The locking ignition switch was an option for extra money. My steering column switch is not connected at all and I donīt have a key for it.

BTW if you are looking for Kadron manifolds check Kaddieshack company.

they are really great and you canīt tell it is not paint if you donīt crawl on the ground to inspect them...

I love it that you're using original hubcaps and not cheap reproductions. There is just something about seeing these cars with a little age to the parts. Nothing beats original patina.

Iīm collecting goodies and parts for correct early 40HP engine for this beautiful car.

Over Christmas holiday I scored an industrial engine manufactured in last week of January 1961 so at least it is the same month as my car. Iīll use this low mileage engine for my car after some inspection.

I already have a NOS 28PICT carb, two early 40HP oil cleaners, NOS stale heat exchangers, several thermostat mechanisms with "venturi ring" and very nice lower cylinder tins. I tried to replicate the loop style vacuum line for the distributor can which turned out quite nice. I also have a very nice big cap distributor with 6V Pertronix and 6V blue coil.

As you can see, industrial engines shared a lot from stock beetle engines. In example this engine also has stock lower tins, but exchangers are modified to direct hot air onto the body of the pump.

Iīll probably install big bore cylinders but otherwise I want to keep the rest of engine bone stock.

What do you think?:-)

In autumn I installed original pop out windows. I canīt wait for summer to give them proper use!
