Hi, Iv'e found a 1980 Covertible rabbit that is in very restorable condition. The only problem is it won't start. It cranks over but won't catch. The person who is selling it said he was jus :) t driving home and it quit, (towed it home). I think its' either a broken or slipped timing belt, or the fuel pump, has quit. Any tips on testing my therories would be appreciated. Is there anyting else on this fuel injection that might have caused this. Also, is there anything I should really check out before making an offer, Come on help me out here Please!

Take the timing cover off and see if the timing belt is still on it, not hard. If its broke it's broke. Turn the key on and see if you can hear the fuel pump run. If it won't run it won't run. Neither of those things are a big deal at all! If you can find out that it is one of those things that is making the car not run. Tell the owner that it will cost big money to have a shop fix it, which it would. Then give him a low offer, get the car cheap, then fix the car yourself and drive the piss out of it or sell it to make money. Rabbits are excellent vehicles if you know what you are doing.

I think every time I ever messed with a water pumper VW it was one of those two things.
