I just read the instructions in my Bentley manual for 1970-1979 Supers and it doesn't say that you have to remove the tank. However, it DOES say that if you have a 72 Super, that you must also remove the fresh air box.
It says that you should disconnect the battery ground strap, then disconnect the wires from the sending unit, take out the 5 bolts in the top of the sending unit (or unscrew the sending unit from the tank - later models), and remove the unit.
When replacing it, the manual says to make sure that you install the rubber gasket and that if it is an earlier model to make sure it has a ground connection clip on the edge of the gasket. And if you have a 72, then I guess you reinstall the fresh air box. |

The Bentley manual says that from 73 on the fresh air box doesn't come out as it is part of the body. It doesn't have anything to do with the A/C.
However, the sender is still removable. The round sender piece on the top of the tank that has the two wires attached to it, actually unscrews from the tank if you can somehow grip it by the edges and turn it (disconnect the wires first). I have been able to loosen the piece myself with my hands but I never actually unscrewed it out completely (never had a need to, I was just curious).
And do this in a well-ventilated area as you are dealing with gasoline. |

| I just checked the Haynes manual as well, and it says nothing that helps here. So if you can't wiggle the sender out, it sure looks like you would have to move the tank itself, which is quite a PIA as you'll have to drain it out the bottom before unbolting it. Are you absolutely sure you have to remove the sender? |

| Yep, I"m sure.. it only works half the time and it keeps getting stuck at 1/2 a tank and when i have more than half a tank of gas up front there a puddle of gas around it |

Two things I can suggest: one, a new gasket around the hole. Two, there are ways to calibrate the gas gauge. Do a search on thesamba and you'll find ways to do it.
Anybody out there besides us have an opinion on this?? |
