I'm going to be installing new Cylinders and pistons soon. Just looking for some advice on what oil to use while breaking in the new top end. Thanks, -K-

I recommend using your favorite usual Castrol GTX 10-40 or 20-50, change it at 250 miles if you have new rings and cylinders, change it again at a 1,000 and then every 5,000 miles thereafter.

5000 Miles! :shock Are you serious? I would never even consider letting any air-cooled VW motor spin over 3000 miles before an oil change and I understand the 1500 mile interval will do you so much the better. Later, -K-

I have a Type 4 engine with the spin-on filter, and any more than every 5,000 miles is a damn waste of the environment. The original rocker shafts are gorgeous, the cam is at 200,000 miles, and my crank was within spec at 419,000 miles, what more can I say?

well you may not have an oil filter or a type 4, so if you dont, i would say every 2500 miles. also, automotive machinists that i have spoken to say that you should drop the oil after the first 100 miles of driving on a rebuild. the same machinists also insist that owners follow the recommendations of the manufacturer when selecting a grade of motor oil. its gotta be better than going along with any random opinion that would be based only on an incomplete understanding of the situation. specifically, i am referring to those who believe that 50 weight is sooo much better than 30 weight... what the hell, lets just run 90 weight gear oil in that engine!!!!!

This is a 1.7L Type IV 914 engine. I'll most likely use straight 30 weight, maybe 10-30 'cause it's winter. I may switch to synthetic after break-in. Thanks for the feedback. Later, -K-
