View original topic: Oil Pump Priming

I've read the procedure in the Tom Wilson book that involves packing the oil pump with petroleum jelly or vasoline to get it going on start up. I don't intend on removing my oil pump. I thought about yanking it for inspection but I think I'd rather just leave it alone unless there is a good reason to mess with it. So my question is, will it self-prime as I'm cranking the engine initially? Later, -K-

If your oil level is correct, it will have enough oil in it to start pumping right away.

When you add external components like an extra oil cooler and filter, it will take a little longer to bring the oil pressure up, so after an oil change you'd want to crank the motor a little while before actually firing it up. Otherwise it should be okay. :)

Oil pumps wear so inspection would be a good reason to pull it.

You can simply oil the inside back of the pump and the shafts for both gears to prime the pump.
