I might sound stupid for asking this. Why is it called a jump seat?

A theory, it's a moveable seat, peolple can jump in or out, and you move the seat to make room for more cargo or put it in for an extra person.
Another theory, maybe it's like seats in cargo planes that can be removed, flip down from the wall for parachuters, who jump out. Jeremy |

It looks like Jeremy's correct.
I've seen it defined as "a removable seat in an automobile" and there's this:
Jump seat.
(a) A movable carriage seat.
(b) A carriage constructed with a seat which may be
shifted so as to make room for second or extra seat.
Also used adjectively; as, a jump-seat wagon.
