It won't be a problem... the engine will fit... unless you don't have the engine mounts for irs pan. Swap the mounts from one engine to the other.

If the engine doesn't have the bosses for the rear engine hanger, then that engine really shouldn't be used. You can use one of those mickey mouse bus engine mounts that attach with the oil pump studs, but this really is a crutch. I say that, because you're asking a lot out of those little 8mm studs (normally the engine is supported by two 10mm bolts and one 8mm bolt). This bus mount is available thru many VW parts suppliers, if you really want one. The better solution is to use a later type3 case or even a bus case with the bosses and do it right. I hope this helps.

Sound piece of advice, I just went out to look at the differences... and It looks like you'd have to pull the fan and housing off to put the cross hanger on(I'm talking T3 Hanger)... I'd give it a try. As bob said a bus one might work as well... but I've never tried a bus block or hanger in my type 3s. Of course I agree that " The better solution is to use a later type3 case " but you will ultimately have to decide what works for you.

What I was meaning was the mickey mouse bus hanger adapter. You can use one of those to adapt a "non boss" engine into a boss equipped engine. It attaches via the oil pump studs (these have to be swapped out for those included in the kit) and the lower rear (rear is rear) thru bolt. Like I said before, this puts a lot of strees on the case thru the oil pump studs. If you ask Marc on the STF type1 forum, he'll tell you, this is a very bad idea. The bosses on a bus or type3 also have inserts in them to get even more shear strength, than the oil pump studs will ever have.

i used a bus mount once and had to cut the hell out of the shroud to make it work and it still gace me problems. id suggest taking some irs brakets sold in the mags and welding them to your swingaxle subframe then ataching the irs parts to it, brackets are cheap and you wont need the rear hanger setup. i know you can rent a jig from someone to locate the irs brackets properly. write the mags for some advice, one of them had an article on how to do it years back and had the info on the company with the jig. thats the best way i did mine. i can try and locate a guy in phx that makes and sells those jigs if you need them. good luck

Or like I mentioned above, use a different case. My 65 Notch is on a 70 pan complete with the IRS rear subframe. I used a later model (73) type1 engine (had the mounting bosses) and I converted the cooling system over to a type3 system. This worked out great for me, as it gave me a new (low mileage used) engine for my type3 ( I had it in my Fastback) and this allowed me to drive my car after being laid up for most of the year. I've had this engine (with the same setup) in 3 different cars over the last 6 years. The only trouble I've had with it during that time was I didn't check the points in 5 years and they needed an adjustment to run better (gap closed up  ), other than that I got my 200 dollars worth out of it. Just a thought.
