Many thanks to IcyWeener, erdo_10, kiefernet, and notchbob for your wonderful advice. After following everything to the letter, today I checked the power to the fuel pump. There was power but the pump did not respond so I changed the pump. Now I have my little Mountain Goat back on the road. Thanks so much for your encouragement and advice.
Warmly

Annie,
Don't leave us hanging! What was the problem/cure? I'm really anxious to know. |

Well the truth is I was given some bad advice a year or so ago. When I first broke down, I thought that I was the fuel pump. I asked the guys at Bow Wow and was told that 'an electic fuel pump either works or doesn't work.' That there is no sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. So I started to trouble shoot it then but was told that it had to be wiring or a short or a bad ground. I didn't have time to deal with it then and so the poor car just sat. This summer I had some time so I rewired the fuel pump thinking that maybe the wire or the ground was bad. This was before I learned the wonders of a test light  . A couple of weeks ago I decided that I would try to replace the fuel pump. That lead me to this wonderful place. I found a fuel pump. However before I installed the new pump I tested the fuse again, the relay, and ran a jumper to the fuel pump. Well the fuel pump fired off so I was feeling like I was back to square one. That was yesterday afternoon. First thing this morning I put the test light on the positive of the fuel pump and had someone turn over the key. Well there was power but the pump would not respond. So I installed the new pump. My car started right up. All is well. This was a good experiance for me. I used my Bentley, my brains and some wonderful expertise in the form of my Samba friends.
Thanks

Atta girl Annie! You did it yourself and you should pat yourself on the back! You just keep at it. You have the manual and you sure don't sound the least bit afraid of a challenge. If anyone tells you to ri pout the fuel injection system and install dual carbs, you tell them to go to hell. The VW FI system is very reliable, and only those who don't understand FI tell you to scrap it. A great place for parts is Bill and Steve's down in California. I think BFY Obsolete may have parts, and there's a chance a local VW dealership in Washington may have some. As a matter of fact, I was in Bremerton for a couple of years in 1990 - 1992, and Bill at Wolfsburg Warehouse may have parts. He certainly has a nice setup and is a great source of information.
Just remember people at The Samba and www.type3.org, and you'll never be alone.
Happy motoring! :D |
