View original topic: Larger windshield seal?

While surfing the forums I saw something mentioning a windshield seal that extends 1/4 an inch or so extra on the bottom. (this would be good to hide rust repairs)...............Does anyone know if these exist? And if so, who sells them?

Thanks!!!

This extra 1/4" you're talking about is the difference between a proper German OEM seal, such as that available from OE Veedub, and a cheezy knock-off, such as those supplied by Rocky Mountain Motor Works. It is really not that apparent from the outside of the vehicle if that is where you're trying to hide repair evidence, it shows up on the inside where your headliner has this bright white halo where the cheesy seal just doesn't reach. However, the cheep deal does help you remove the windshield in a hurry, I can do it with a toothbrush and my fingers.
I would prefer the OEM seal, though.

I thought he meant a special one with an extra lip at the bottom?

The "larger" seal is the Genuine VW Brazil seal that Bus Depot and other vendors sell when they list it as genuine. The details of it are archived at type2.com:

Summary of Brazil seal benefits:

- fits so well it breaks 1 in 5 windshield's and Ron recommends getting an installer to take the risk. Jeez. Obviously a Brazil seal intended for a Mexican bus used on a US model is a problem for whatever reason.

- is larger and will hide rust longer so it becomes an even bigger problem. Good idea!

I installed the OEVeedub OE German seal back in July. It was expensive but fit so well it went in without a hitch. No chance of breaking the glass. Don't get hooked by the genuine label. Keeping out the water and preventing rust damage down the road will have it pay for itself. Should you leave it on for 25 years even if you are lucky with your windshield? Probably not but expect it to last the longest.

FYI, EPDM pluses and minuses are documented here not that I think VWTrends is terrible scientific.
