View original topic: Remove Vent Wing Window Glass? :?:

Anyone have any words of wisdom for removing the vent wing window glass on my '71 Super? I need to replace the window latch, and need to remove the glass in order to access the two rivets that hold 'em in.

Thanks!
Larry

Dry hands, or rubber gloves. Sandwich the glass between your hands (like you're praying) and yank!

Thanks, Bob. This sounds like it's a job you've done before?

Is the (a) seal glued to the window or (b) glued to the frame or both?

Thanks,
Larry

I did this on my 67 a couple months ago. When I yanked the glass, the seals stayed in the channel. They were in good shape so I didn't replace them. I didn't, however, have any luck with the rivets supplied with the latch kit. Couldn't get the damn solid ends to flatten no matter what I tried. I ended up using regular aluminum rivits, and my angle grinder to take off the excess aluminum rivets in the channel area. I was suprised how much the angle grinder flattened the rivet almost flush with the frame. Looked good, sturdy, too!

I used soapy water all over the seals and glass, and pushed the glass into place, and seated it with a rubber mallet.

Fill the bathtub up with hot water and let the vent windows sit in the there for a bit. That will help loosen the glass before removing it.

Got it, folks ... Thanks!

Couple of shots with a heat gun loosened the old seal sufficiently to pull the glass out.

I've pulled them out by hand (see method mentioned above).

Second, I've used a small screw driver into the top of the frame and prying just a little to get it to pop out enough to pull by hand.

Last, I've put a rag over the glass and clamped a pair of vice grips down. Double or triple fold the rag first and use just enough vice grip tightness to get it to start moving, then pull out by hand. You must pull straight out or you will break the glass. This method might be for careful people only...

Hey Bogaat.

How do you get that '71 Super on it's side to fit in the tub with hot water
