This has been a frustrating week for me, I recently installed new heads on my type 4 engine, and against all who have warned me about replacing the throw out bearing and clutch I used the same ones before I dropped my engine. My problem exist when I shift into reverse my engine dies, but doesn't on any other gear. I have checked the adjustment on the clutch cable and I get a 1/2 to 3/4 play on the clutch before any tension. I don't wan't to have to remove the engine again if it isn't the clutch does anyone know what could be the problem, thanks for the tip.

| Check the wires from the coil to the backup light switch on the tranny... |

That's almost certainly the kind of electrical problem that's causing the engine to die.
There should be a fuse in the engine compartment that protects the coil if one of the backup lighting wires short out. |

And you may find that the fuse holder clip located near the coil for the back-up lights has shorted against a frayed wire or the fuse holder itself.

I had the same problem after R&R the tranny on my 70- I had simply reversed the wires on the switch...
Which incidentally has to come back out 3years later because the rebuilt from Stuff didnt last ... :? |
