I've seen 3 ads recently offering 67 outside door handles that were not for 67s, but 66s. The mechanisms are different enough that the handles will not interchange, although they look identical on the outside.
Here's one that has a 66 and earlier key:

Another one with the mechanism that works on early 66s and some other earlier cars only, not 67s:

Again another 66 handle with a single cut key:

Here is an example of a true 67 handle with a double cut key. Note the paddle mechanism and how it differs from the other poser handles:

Just because it has a round push button, doesn't make it a 67 handle. The true indicator is the key code stamped on the handle. A code with the letter K in it is a 67 handle (like 34K021). If it has the letter S, its a 66(like SC123). Always ask the seller what the code is stamped in the handle (not the key). |

I never knew the difference between the handles myself. Probably cause I am not into bugs. But this is definatly good information. Thanks for the tip.

If you can be very cool and explain to the seller in a way you explained it to us, I bet the seller would appreciate that info. Someone may have changed out the doorhandle before he bought the car, giving him the impression the door handle is from a 1967. It's funny, but all across the VW line, the 1967 is the most unique and troublesome year for all VW models.
I've pointed out erroneous information to people selling Ghia parts, and they really appreciated it. The good part about explaining the seller's error is that it saves him from being slammed by the buyer, should the buyer learn what was represented is not what was expected. Understand? |

I know what you mean. In that eBay auction I linked to above, I informed a high bidder and the seller about the pair of 66 handles described as 67. I figured I saved the bidder from getting the wrong handles, and the seller from a negative. But it doesn't help much when someone snipes at the end.
I don't have all the information yet. I've identified 3 different mechanisms for locking and unlocking used from 60-67. And I've seen all 3 with round buttons, and 2 of them with square buttons. The one in my ad above, I've only seen that mechanism on a round button handle, and only with the unique 67 key code. The key code is a strong indicator. A handle with the K is definitely 67 only. An SU, SC, or SV is definitely NOT 67, regardless of the button shape. |
