I recently acquired a 1974 Bus - body #2342160521 & engine #W0111490. I am trying to learn as much as I can by reading John Muir's "How to Keep Your Volkswagon Alive" but I still have some unanswered questions like - do I have a 1600, 1700 or 1800 engine ( I have figured out that it is a type IV). Also, what is the difference between a van, microbus, kombi & westy, etc...
Any other interesting info would be appreciated!
Sincere Thanks,

The letter at the beggining of your engine code "W" means it is in fact a type four. Specifically a 1700 or 1.7 that when new made about 80 hp. You should head on over to www.vintagebus.com and get yourself a wiring diagram for your bus, this is a useful resource. I don't know what else to tell you, keep asking questions as they come up.
Erik
ps its Volkswagen not Volkswagon as you posted :D |

Regarding the engine #, I think there is probably an "A" in front of the "W". My Bentley's Official VW Service Manual lists AW engines as being in buses (w/auto or manual trans) from August 1973 through July 1974.

Engine codes are listed at the Type IV Secret's revealed website.
W is an early 1.7L from a 914 or 411. Sounds like the original engine was swapped out for this one. |

| I think rich is correct. I just checked a book. The W type 4 engine was in type 4's. e.g. a 411 |

Hi Bob! Welcome to VW bus land - you are starting a whole new phase of your life as a bus owner!
For your question about microbus, kombi, etc, also go to vintagebus ...
http://www.vintagebus.com/techinfo/definitions.html
Westys are Westfalia camper buses. Several different companies did camper conversions, so only Westfalias are Westys..... the first one's were made in 1952 in Widenbruck, Germany
I also highly recommend type2.com for bay window info.... check out their library and archive.... :x-mas: |
