View original topic: Why The Rectangular "Riser"
Duncwarw Thu Dec 04, 2003 5:58 pm

All,

Having just acquired the last part needed for my heating system, I have two questions. The part I refer to is what I call a "heat riser" or duct. There are two on my engine ('78 2L Hydraulic in my '73 Campmobile). they each attach on one end to a heat exchanger, and on the other end to the flexible carboard pipes from the blower. Here are my questions......

1. Why is the right one rectangular ('seems like a way to make you go to VW for the hose)?

2. What can I use to replace my missing flexi-hose? I have no problem with making the riser round, but NAPA tells me they only have 2 3/8" "defroster hose" comprised of plastic and wire. Surely, this has been addressed before.

A little help?

Paul

The rectangular duct is that way to avoid proximity to the alternator junk.
You can get new correct hoses from RMMW or Bus Depot.

Thank's!

I knew there must be a logical answer.

PS; I hope to finish this soon. Damn, it's getting cold in New York!

See my photo.

The original hose on the right was a plastic accordian and it fit nicely into the molded plastic piece. The hose on the left is standard round VW heater hose.

The hose you will get from the part vendors will the like the left style and although it will have a square opening it will be very stiff and hard to bend so you may have to use a tie to secure it to the molded piece.

Ratwell,

You really try hard to please!
Ripping the whole system out of the bus so you could provide me with that great image may be going "over the top" though :D

Thanks!

The rectangular hose that attaches to the right side heater box is actually in two pieces. Ratwell's photo shows this perfectly. The first piece is hard plastic with a hose clamp that attaches directly to the heater box. The second piece is the hose itself that attaches to the top of the plastic piece and goes on up to the blower fan. I looked at the BusDepot website and they apparently sell the hose, but does anybody know of a supplier for the hard plastic piece that attaches directly to the heater box? I never even see them on Ebay, but they are always missing when I buy a bus.

It seems like a lot of hassle to me.

I guess the only place to find that plastic piece is to find a Type II in a junkyard. Ten years ago, that wasn't hard to do. I think I'm going to apply my legendary metal fabrication/welding skills to come up with a round top to that thing so I don't have to deal with the hassles;-)

Oh yeah, I switched from Bass to Double Diamond after the last bad keg.
I'm hoping my welding will improve!

The original hose isn't available anymore. The next best thing is good enough (it seals). The molded item 211 261 233 is available from Bus Depot according to the website but it's a much cheaper junkyard item. I have a spare for anyone that desperately needs it.

Duncwarw, I'm still putting my bus back together from the last question that was asked! Seriously, I've just got a lot of photos from the last 2 years.

My original 1973 bus uses a metal pipe from each exchanger to the tin openings. Then it has paper covered pleated hoses up to the metal blower housing. The heater hoses have quick-release clips the better which to perform lightening-quick battery electrolyte checks on race day. . . . or something. Do you have the late style plastic crap on your engine or the original metal with a later engine long block lurking underneath all that plastic?

The point of the plastic molded piece is to clear the air filter for the fuel injection.

Do we have to keep hearing how crappy every part that was changed after the 73 model year? It's starting to wear a little thin that's all...

Colin,

Mine's a '73 Campmobile. The original 1.7L engine is no more. I had a 1.8L for about a day in the '80s and have had the current 2L hydraulic since. I have had the van for about 20 years and driven it for about two weeks. The details are on my site at http://www.paultaylorimaging.com.

I am not sure if I ever had the right side heat riser, but I do have a vague recollection of a corrugated cardboard hose that actually had a rectangular end. Am I dreaming, or did this hose actually exist? I have no memory of a plastic duct at all (not that plastic's a bad thing). I have fabricated and extension on my new-found rectangular riser that ends in a circular duct so I'm looking for an appropriate hose as I write this.

This hose is available in "right" and "left" permutations from Bus Depot #211-261-236 $4.95 ea. or you can try Rocky Mountain Motor Works same # with an A for 3.95 ea. Photo on Depot site.

If you would like. . . .

Colin,

Thank's for the info. I couldn't find it at first because Bus Depot doesn't use dashes in part numbers apparently. Your number (211261236), and information, are correct of course.

Thank's again for all the help.

Paul
