Hiya folks,
I am looking into a commuter car with some style and still pretty good economy along with some dependability. I am pretty much muscle car guy who hasnt paid too much attention to VWs in the past. However, living in SoCal, it is not like I do not see some old VW on pretty much a daily basis :D I am not that big of a fan of bugs, so it is pretty much Type3 that I am interested in. I have always thought notchbacks were a great looking car, and am checking out the possibility of picking one up. What I am looking for is a fairly accurate account of gas mileage in a fairly stock Type3. I realize that there are endless possibilities of ways to increase perfromance and power in these guys, but that is not what I am looking at all. I check out what some you guys are driving, and think they look great, but if its going to run in teens or 20 MPG I will just as well keep drving my truck.
Thanks in advance for help.

I have kept a record on all of my Type 3s and I always saw at least 25 mpg. This included a 1914cc engine.
From memory:
My stock '67 Squareback (dual port, dual carb. 1600cc engine) usually got 27-30 mpg. Most traveling was highway, although it was commuting with some traffic.
My stock '66 Type 34 (single port, dual carb. 1600cc engine) gets around 28-30 mpg.
Type 3s have great gas mileage when kept in proper operating condition. |
