The reduction box?
It's purpose is to reduce the gear ratio of the transmission in order to provide more torque at lower speeds with the sacrifice of a lower top speed. This also allows a smaller engine to push more weight.
It has the added benefit of increasing ground clearance. |

| It actually a temporary tranny. It is used so you can still use your Bus until you get a Bug tranny under that Bus! :lol: |

The original purpose was to improve ground clearance. The initial design could not allow swing axles to provide necessary clearance without a horrid 45* positive camber.
