I'm about to install my new engine in my 71 bus, but I'm unsure of the proper break-in procedure. I got a fairly detailed list from type2.com, nut my main concern is about priming the engine before I turn the key. I know that for some cars you can buy a priming rod that you put on a drill and stick down the distributor to get the oil flowing....is this necessary and /or available? Should I just bolt it in there and turn the key??

Try posting this in the engine forum. They'll probably jump on it quicker...
That's a great question by the way...

you won't find a priming rod that will work for a vw. priming rods are for oil pumps that are run off of the distributor. What I do to prime my engines is: pull the coil wire, take the plugs out, make sure the oil sending unit wire is hooked up and then turn it over until you have oil pressure. Another further step that works is to pack vasoline into the aoil pump when you put the engine together. That causes suction and helps pick up oil quicker. Hope this helps.
