Well I posted a few days ago, and a big thanks to the tips to check out the wiring diagrams on VWTpye2.com, they were way better than the ones in Bentley and led the way to me figuring out why the dash lights (GEN/OIL) weren't working.....the black wire that feeds it power from the fuse box was on the wrong location!!!! It was attached to fuse #4 when the diagram has it on #9 , and after moving it, the lights come on with the key ON.

Now here's the skinny: Now the turn signals don't work!!! If I take the black gauge cluster wire off, the turn signals work fine (on the exterior lights, that is)

So now what gives? I can either have my warning lights or I can have my turn signals.

I want both!!!! Any suggestions? Everything seems to be OK with the signal wiring, but it's kinda hard to figure it out.....the relay is the black plastic variety with 3 prongs....It clicks just fine with that darn wire off......Oh yeah, the 4 ways work with the key OFF, but only then. Hmm....

Mark, sounds like a grounding issue. Try removing the screw in the black flasher unit and clean it up and re-install the screw. These early type flashers used a screw for the gound, and they like to get a layer of rust at the connection. If this doesn't fix the problem, then you need to dig a little deeper.
You really want the Gen/Oil lights to work correctly, and with that black wire connected like its supposed to be (you just had it there), then work out the turn signals and 4 ways. You're currently working on 2 different problems that are over lapping each other. You need to correct one, then chase the other. With the black wire connected like you just had it, did the turn signals work on the outside? The black wire feeds 12V+ into the cluster, so this has to be connected to a switched 12V supply, not the hi or low beams (fuse#4).
From the sounds of things, the turn signals were also wired in wrong, since you already found out that the gauge cluster power feed was on the wrong terminal. I hope this helps.

I know this sounds really bad, but I got an 'on the side' inspection sticker because I couldn't figure out the turn signals on my bus. Flashers work, but no front parking lights, no right signal front of back........may never figure it out
