I was thinking about getting rid of my oil bath filter for a newer smaller
air filter but decited to keep it after all.
I don't mind changing the oil when I do and engine oil change. The thing that bothers me is the space that it takes up.
I was thinking about sawing off the snout off that thing. If I cut about 3 or 4 inches off I could rotate it around to the side of the bus. I now have it pointing towards the back of the bus where it makes it hell to get to the battery.
Any thoughts? |

| Leave it be man, if you want to cut that snout off because of space reasons, just take it off and get an aftermarket filter. IMO, the oil baths are best. |

I would like to keep it. From what I've read volkswagen beleived they were so good they didnt see the need for an oil filter. I'm guessing that they got rid of them for convience and space issues.
Half the Bus owners I talk to keep them, the other half upgrade.
Decisions decisions...... |

It depends if you like removing the entire unit to service it or just a paper filter. I prefer the paper myself.
The oil bath filter catches any particle heavier than air in the intake. The paper filter catch particles down to a certain size in microns. After a small enough size, particles that get through don't appreciably reduce the engine life, apparently, so they're good enough. The biggest advantage of the paper element is that you can mount it sideways.
I've got a paper filter on my bus (factory layout) and I still get a little sludge now and again below the oil screen on the bottom of the engine. The screen is doing it's job and you can't avoid particles that blow by the rings and contaminate the oil. |
