I would guess that the problem is either 1) no power back there or 2) a broken defrost grid.
The power to the window can be tested with a voltmeter and the grid can be tested with by means of continuity or impedence.
Could be a blown fuse, a broken wire, bad switch, or just a bad connection.
The grid repair kit can ususally be purchased at the local FLAPS and consists of a kind of "paint on electrical connection" that looks like silver paint and then is colored with iodine.
I had to fix on about 10 years ago in my Grand Wagoneer and ended up buying the kit from the dealer for about $10 or so. |

Hiya Cary,
Randy is correct about the possible causes for a non-functioning rear defroster. Alas the problem, at this point in time (32 years later), is usually a worn out grid. And the truth of the matter is that there is no way to fix that problem. The fix-it kits referred to by Randy are for small breaks in individual wires. They work well for that. But anybody who has used these kits to repair a grid line break will also tell you that trying to redo most of the grid is a fool's errand.
And there seem to no aftermarket replacements (I'm hoping that someone will chime in here and tell me I'm wrong!) anywhere. I've looked on both sides of the pond to no avail. So, what's a guy to do? Apparently not much for this particular problem.

Boy I think Mike is correct, it could very well be the whole grid after all this time. I think I would inspect the whole grid with a magnifying glass to see how much is damaged and then think about either fixing it or trying to find a good one. Mine just had a dog toenail scratch on it, but it was enough to keep it from working.
I don't know if you could order one from a windshield place or not. Perhaps someone in the parts section or on e-bay or a junkyard.... |

| Mine looks like a "pack" of dogs ran across it! :D My grid is shot too. Let's see if anyone has any suggestions for replacements. |

| Anyone know what the resistance is supposed to be through the grid? |
