Haven't been to a VW show or event yet, is there any you recommend?

The Classic is regarded as the biggest and best, there are shows and events for a whole week in the summer.

Pamona Swap Meet is good for seeing a wide range of VWs, and a slew of other cars. VWs get their own swap space while everyone else mingles.

How "West Coast" are you talking? South or North?

the two big ones seem to be the Airhead run from WA to SoCal along HWY 1 and the other is Lake Havasu Bays by the bridge that was last week.

In Norcal- without question: Kelley Park in San Jose.

DO THEM ALL!
Every year I give myself the challenge of doing all the Bug-O-Ramma Shows,
and a show or two in Washington State.
But the best I've ever done is:
A Washington State Show in March
Kelly Park in April
Bugorama Sacramento in May
VW Classic Weekend in June
Peninsula Automotive Show
Bugorama Sacramento in Aug

I had a girlfriend in Las Vegas, but she's too crazy to visit and do the Vegas Bugorama show in Oct.

Also, investigate the shows you might attend in the "shows' forums- it's a great place to read feedback- and many people provide photos of the events. You may find yourself wanting to volunteer for a show or two- and get the inside scoop.

If you are looking up north the woodburn oregon show and the vintage show are the best ones to go to
Yakima is a good one also but more for hanging out with cool people then show stuff

I have been to octo and the classic a few times and i thought octo was alot better then the classic was
