Do the 009 distributors work well with the FI engines on later Beetles?
What are the ups and downs here? I need to replace my stock distributor, and it looks like the 009 is my only feasible route (short of having my stock original rebuilt). |

They do work, I have done it.
But if your state has a smog test, you will fail with a 009 if they notice its missing the vacuum advance. If they don't notice you will probably fail anyway on the tailpipe test since the idle timing is too advanced for low HC.
Why don't you rebuild your dist yourself? You can get some donor distributors for parts at junkyards or swap meets. |

What are the numbers on your stock distributor? I have a whole bunch of used ones and may be able to match one up. is it just the vacume advance canister that is bad on it or what?
You could get a good used vacume can or there are places that still sell new ones.
009's do work like Bruce said, and you can retard the timing for the testing ( the car will not run real well but it should pass the test) and then advance it back after you get it home. |

| Sorry to Hijack, But which dizzys had the second plate underneath that had something to do with the mechanical fuel injection? Never owned anything that new. |

That was a type 3 and type 4 FI deal... different FI Set up... " AFC" I think was the term??? (there are 3 different designations for the Bosch FI systems used)... use points in the bottom of the dizzy to fire the injectors.
Type 1 75 and later FI and the Type 2's did not use that style... thus an 009 will work, but may not be as desireable to some if it's mechanical advance tendencies do not fit a particular individuals driving style. |

Thanks for the advice guys.
Hey Keifernet, sorry it took so long to respond, but the forum's been down every time I've tried to use it.
The distributor is on a 78 vert (#043-905-205H) and the vac can is #07-114.
Both are working okay right now, but it's been hard to get the timing right, so I thought that the distr. might need some attention. After hearing the advice on the 009, I think I'll try to stay stock. If you have one, I'd be very interested. At the very least, I need a back up! Please let me know.

Okay John, I'll dig around some when I am messing about my stash during the Holiday's... and PM you when I find something.
for now you should try a few drops of liquid wrench under the rotor on the felt( if it is still there) to lube the shaft/advance mechanism... and twist the rotor back and forth a bunch to work it in and make sure it is free.
the dist. has both a mechanical and vacume advance so doing that will make sure teh mechanical part is free and smooth. |
