View original topic: Heads & Cam for 1800
ap_sand Wed Feb 26, 2014 12:43 pm

Thick wall 88's, 1800 CC bottom end. Sleeved lifter bores. Have been reading the other 1800 threads, but my application is a bit different.

Will be in a '70 T1 daily driver. Local/freeway travel (70-75 mph) with weekend blasts in foothill twisties (former MC roadracer).

Would like the torque peak about 4500-5000 running up to a 6500 rpm redline.

Running a FK-41 in a mild 1600 right now and like it. Only regret is that it doesn't have a counterweighted crank. Based on this, considering an FK-42 or -43. Maybe a Web 86a or 86b? (I like getting the lift at the rocker).

Inputs/suggestions please! Also heads to match the above cams.

Thanks,
Andrew

Need to know what carb/carbs and if you are running heater boxes. Dan

40 Dells.

Yes on heater boxes. Need them for a DD here in the pacific northwet. Will go with 1.5" high performance boxes of needed.

Dan Ruddock Wed Feb 26, 2014 1:26 pm

I would go with the 86A (great smooth and quiet cam). With the 1.5 boxes I would go with big valve heads and with stock boxes stock valve heads. If your heart is set on a Engle a FK7 or FK8 is a better choice (not as harsh as the FK4-X). Dan

Looks like the FK7/8 bracket the 86a @0.050.

Inclined to the 1.5 exhaust if it doesn't push the power band too high.

The current 1600 is put together with a 0.040 deck. Again, like the way it runs. Planning on 0.040 - 0.045 again. Want to put together a lighter weight valve train. CB lightweight lifters, ACnet aluminum pushrods, Ti retainers. Want to go with as light a weight springs as possible. Any feeling as to the strength of the various vendors duals? I'm assuming (yeah, I know) that I'm just beyond where HD singles will do.

Which heads? DRD, Mofoco, ACnet?

Dan Ruddock Wed Feb 26, 2014 4:04 pm

Yea the 86a at 252@ .050 is right where you want to be and I like it because it is easy on parts. Another option is the GB309 which is the old engle V26 which is very much like the 86A and also easy on parts.

I would stay away from Ti for a dd car.

Hands down I like the Berg springs a retainers because of there excellent fit.

For me it's hard to say on the heads because I do my own head work. The CB Los Panchito sounds like a good value.

What rockers are you going to run?

Dan

Bugpack 1.4.

What's the issue with Ti retainers on a DD?

Dan Ruddock Wed Feb 26, 2014 5:22 pm

Over time and miles they wear and gets Ti in your oil. Fine for a race car but not for DD car. With those rockers it sounds like a very nice combo. I like building conservative engines that live. I would read this thread about a motor that lived. Dan

Thanks Dan.

I appreciate the back and forth. I'm not a novice, but have lots of room to learn.

About 8.8 with the Web 86a? Will go premium, but need to stick to pump gas.

Anything else occur to you?

Thanks,
Andrew

Your choice of CR sounds fine for 91 pump gas.

To me tuning must be right so that it runs cool which is key for long life. Dan

you definitely don't need Ti retainers for this. I'd find a cam and rocker combo that lifts .450-.500" at the valve, which will work well with the heads you need to run for this engine.

Thanks John:

Great, more validation.

I know you have an interest in selling heads. Which ones do you recommend?

DRD L3 heads, cb performance makes a nice 1.5" exh w/heater boxes , the bugpack unit I bought from CIP1 did not fit well at all . Is Charlie Puzzo's still open ?

you have to make a firm decision on what exhaust you are going to run. Anything bigger than 35x32 REQUIRES 1 1/2" exhaust and big bore heater boxes.

Once you decide on an exhaust, you can select heads.

If you use 35x32mm heads, there is no point in more than .450" valve lift.

Will use 1.5" exhaust with high performance heater boxes.

Then use a good 40 x 35mm ported head, PROPERLY PORTED (not just "big valve). Valve lift around ..450-.500", will work very well.

FK7, 86A, W120 or 125, are all good choices.

With that combo, you have a couple different heads to choose from that will work well. One of the choices is the Made in the USA Mofoco 042 heads. 40mm x 35.5mm stainless steel valves with the proper sized ports cast into the head from the foundry. No need to CNC or hand port these heads. Here is a link. Let me know if you have any questions.

If you want to see our heads being machined right now, click onto our facebook page. I already posted one video and will have another up this afternoon.
