We are about to start a long trip around the US. Is there a good resource to help us find good mechanics while on the road? We can do an advance search in cities, but would like to know ahead of time where repair shops are between major cities. Is there a directory, guide or map anyone can recommend?

Are you going to be driving a VW? And what type?

Air cooled or water cooled? T-1 or T-4 engine? Bug, bus, van, or?
Lots of ACVW T-1 familiar shops about everywhere. Then late Bays with their T-4's good luck finding a good experienced shop anywhere. Vanagons and whatever late ones maybe just a VW dealership.

Then the difficulty with most lists of repair facilities don't differentiate between good ones and bad ones.

Whatever type of VW you have you might be best by digging around in the appropriate forum.

Welcome to The Samba.

Look in the "Community" tab on the main menu at the top of this page. It list many business all across the country. You can search by state.

If you ever become broke down you can always post your location here and somebody will respond and help.

What are your travel states? I like am taking a trip to the Texas classic and there is not much in the way of towns along the way.

I've always had good luck with recommendations from Roadhaus.

Look in the rear-view mirror. In other words, learn how to do a lot of minor & medium stuff yourself. Many mechanics are not open weekends.
