What color wires are you hooking up to what????
you should be hooking up just a green wire to the tach to the negative side of the coil.... same side as the condenser wire goes to
the where your tach is you have the ususal + ( red) - (Blk) and maybe a blue for the instrument light.
but remember some black wires on a VW ARE ACTUALLY HOT 12V+ |

| ive has wires melt before and usually the problem was it was not grounded. or you might have some bare wires touching eachother. just my two cents. |

Here's how the coil and dizzy should be wired.... thanks to Speedy Jim!
Tach should go to the #1 terminal on the coil, same as the original green wire to the dizzy. If wires are melting you have the hot lead shorted to ground somewhere, or the dizzy hooked to the #15 terminal on the coil. The black harness lead should be hot with the ignition switch. The points are just a switch to ground, so if you have them hooked up to the hot lead, they are a direct short when closed and wires will melt.
