Photos and articles here point to Wolfsburg and Hanover and Emden.
Where were engines, trannies, front ends, made, and where were the cars assembled? Did it change over the (relatively) short production run?

I was of the understanding that the type 3 was designed an eventually built in the burned out part of the Wolfsburg factory (after it had been boarded up and repaired inside).

My grandparents always took delivery of their Type 3s (before available in USA and after) at Wolfsburg. Still have a pair of the oval Wolfsburg plates from their '72.

Some nice information here, also agreeing on Wolfsburg, there is some mention around as well that it was Emden later.
