I've got a '66 bug with a 1641. Recently the voltameter has been pegging past 16 on the gauge. I understand it does that if the battery if run down, but it's like that all the time. Last short drive I did the generator was hot and little smoke coming out. Is it the voltage regulator or something else? :?: Thanks guys |

Most likely the VR is failing. |

A good way to "see" the battery getting fried is to put a voltmeter or multimeter right on the - and + terminal of the battery. If your getting 16+ at the battery it's gonna boil. That's what a "regulator" does starts and stops the voltage to the battery depending on its needs. Is it Direct Current-Generator or Alternating Current-Altenator? |

Replace the generator and regulator at the same time. |
