I have an 88 Westy with a manual transmission. 1 - 3 and 4 gears are fine but 2nd gear almost always grinds when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd. The only time it does not grind is if I take the van down to 20 mph. I know squat about transmissions as I have never had one apart. As the other gears are fine I am assuming that the clutch is fine. Is there something fairly simple that I can check to see what may be causing the issue or is it time for an overhaul?

TIA

You could try an oil change to see if things improve but 2nd gear is buried deep inside the main cluster of gears and only accessible by stripping the transmission down.

It's a rebuild to fix it.

The only thing that you can check by removing the transmission and pulling off the end casing is if there is any play in the pinion bearing.

This is one of the main causes for 2nd gear crunching.

You can't do anything about it even if there is play in the pinion bearing, it's the same result... a rebuild.

Sorry I couldn't give you better news.
