Hi all im new to the Samba but not new to VW's. i recently picked up my moms old bus out of a field a month ago and am going to restore it. im planning on doing the irs type 1 Swap which i already have. My question is what size motor should i run. its gonna be a driver and i want to cruise at 70 on the high way all day long. the rear gear will be 3.88 and have 195/60/15s on it. im thinking a 1776. check out my Gallery. it sat in a field since my mom passed away in 1992. i got it back and am going to redo it the way my dad had it for my mom. |

personally I like the 4:12 gearing with engine under 2L and the 3:88 with engines over 2L IMO
the 3:88 will be better for doing 70mph on the freeway but with a 1776cc it may be alittle sluggish on hills especially when loaded down
I would also suggest if you want to cruise at those speeds regularly you should "upgrade" the brakes with dual circuit MC and maybe some discs  |

Sweet a bullet nose 15w! As far as engine, I ran a single port 1776 in my 63 back in 2004, but a 4:12 gear ration. It did fine, of course not so good on hills. That is to be expected without RGBs. You have a PM! |

my last bus had a completely stock '68 bug tranny(4:12) with a mild 1776 dual port with 40 IDFs and I could pull hills at 65 mph fully loaded with no problems |

a 1776 can overheat just as easily as a 2110 if it's not built right
if you build it right with the right combo of parts it will not overheat
the stroke of the engine will not matter as much as the bore and cooling system does when building anything bigger then stock |

I built a 1800 SP that I found on the aircooled.net site. It's not a huge engine, but it runs great and I've driven it with zero issues even in Alabama. There is a few hundered miles between us, but the temps get pretty high here with humidity. You can find the article here:

you said your 1776 sp was a dog on hills and I was pointing out that if it was a dp with dual carbs it wouldn't be such a dog on the hills
plus sp vs. dp have nothing to do with engine temps no matter where you live  |

Are you guys running a external old cooler other than the stock one? I'll have to start a build thread. Also there is a story behind this bus. That alot of people might think is kinda crazy. But it's been in my dad's name since 87. I was 2 years old. |
