It's the VIN for a 65 deluxe with a short middle seat, left hand drive, cargo doors on the right. It may or may not be a 21 window as that will be indicated on the m-code plate. All deluxe models were 21 windows unless the sunroof and sky windows were ordered as a delete--code 130--which made the bus a 13 window.

If you see the bus and it has a sunroof and sky windows, it's likely authentic but there have been sunroofs added to 13 window buses. Check the m-code for more evidence.

no sunroof, but it does have the sky windows. I wont have the m code info until Monday.

very unusual to have skylights without a sunroof if it's real it would be 1 of the maybe 2-3(?) known to exist

it would be more likely someone cover out the sunroof hole or added the skylights

Sounds like this Bus.

Run away as fast as you can from this Bus, there is so much scariness I don't even know where to begin.

The skylights are not original and don't even look right.

Highaltitudecruiser Sat May 17, 2014 10:32 pm

That is the one. did you see it in person?

EverettB Sat May 17, 2014 10:45 pm

No, I can tell just from the photos.

He has a '67 too, it looks very similar:

$29000 for either of those Buses will be a huge mistake.
I wouldn't pay $29000 for both.

I always wonder why bother hacking in skylights and no sunroof, as a deluxe 13 with correct interior would have cost the same to build and would have been worth a lot more

If that were a 9 digit VIN, it would be for a 1965 deluxe bus, as it begins with 255.

But as it is a TEN digit VIN beginning with 255, it is for a 1975 bus.

FWIW, you cannot tell by the VIN whether the bus is sunroof or hardtop deluxe.

Highaltcruiser....When Ev suggests that you run away please listen to him. He has your best interests in mind.

Can you buy a new roof skin for this bus to replace the skylight window hack?

You can buy and replace virtually everything on these buses but the real question is, would it be worth it? That is a very high price for a 13, and the bus if far from worth it if the hacked windows were not there. Given the hack, and given the nearly identical look of the 67 he also advertises, the quality of the work hidden under the paint (bondo?) is questionable, IMO. I would not venture near that bus without an in-person inspection and, considering the cost to make just the roof correct, the price would be considerably lower than he's asking.

I second Everett. Run far, far away.

No one makes the whole new roof but you could do patch repairs or this

But honestly those two san diego buses are price aleast twice of what their worth and who knows what else these people have fuck up on them

Honestly, with these two nearly identical hacks, you've got to ask yourself, what other cheap/shortcuts have been taken? I mean, if you're going to hack in sky windows, all materials are available to do it correctly with pressed openings for the outer skin and inner support. Did he do it correctly? No, that would be too expensive, so he just cut holes in the roof with no recess for the seal and no inner supports. Ok, he just cuts holes in the roof, so how hard would it be to get curved glass (easily available) to fit the openings? He didn't even do that (too expensive?). Notice the engine cover is not latched? I suspect there is no apron--and all this for a mere 29K! All of this questionable work is covered in a nice (?) new paint job to hook novice bus owners.

These things tell you volumes, IMO, about the quality (or lack) of the work on these buses. Education is your best defense, and this site is a primer for information to avoid costly mistakes.

Hmmmm, that is a good catch.

I noticed his '67 has a 9-digit VIN - 237022657
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1627062
and his '68 has an 8-digit VIN - 26854332
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1625793
so these may be typos.

But another red flag* and something to check out

* get it? Because they are red, haha, I kill me
