couldn't really find the answer with a search. ( '65 bus 6v 1500 engine )

When I turn the key, nothing really happens, but when holding it in starting position, after like 10-15 seconds all of a sudden the start motor does start cranking.

What do you think?

ignition switch bad?
starter relay bad?

The bus always has a lazy starting problem. Starter was replaced last year with a refurbished one, and the ignition switch is one of those mexican ones, but many have this.

Maybe on of those 6v relay fast start kits can help?

All tips welcome

You can run a few simple checks.

Try disconnecting the the starter wire, terminal 50, from the ignition switch and jump it directly to terminal 30. Do you get the same time lag for the starter to engage or does the starter engage immediately? If the starter engages immediately and does so consistently, the problem is likely the switch. If you still have the time lag, the problem is at the starter/solenoid.

A relay kit simply uses the voltage from the ignition switch (that goes to the starter solenoid, high amperage draw) to activate a relay (low amperage draw) that switches power to the starter solenoid directly from the battery. This could help your problem if either the switch wire isn't providing enough amperage/voltage to a high resistance solenoid or starter.

Could be anything in the electrical system.

Take off both battery cables and clean both ends. Replace and suspect cable or ones that have those junk quicky fix bolt on battery clamps.
Do same with transaxle to body ground cable. Use dielectric grease to seal the cleaned connection spots from oxygen and all too soon corrosion.

Check voltage at the battery with engine off, and check how much of this voltage is getting thru to the starter solenoid with that wire off the solenoid and helper turning ignition switch.

Can you try another 6 volt starter just to eliminate that as the problem area?

Similar 6volt behavior comes from a highly carboned armature and highly pitted carboned solenoid internal contacts.

Did you replace the starter bushing when you replaced the starter last year?
