I'm wanting to buy a pre-1977 VW bus - never even ridden in one, but have had Beetles in the past & loved them. I was wondering if you can get an old VW bus with ac - were they originally made with it? Also, if you have any advice, it'll be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help!

Yes anything is possible. Just have to have the horsepower to run the unit and push the bus down the road.

Gilmore enterprises sells a modern a/c units for bugs & buses, only knocks a couple of hp off the performance - not like the old units.

This will do it. It's Jake Raby's wife's car with a Type 4 and AC. Jake says it has over 200hp and runs cool even with the AC blasting in the Georgia summer.

That engine is beyond what any VW driver would be able to attain.

You'll be happier and way ahead of the game if you get a new Gilmore or Ice AC unit than screwing around with 35 year old parts. Less hp drain from compressor too.
