I've just picked up a trail rail with a full flow 1835, twin Weber 44 IDF's, mild cam. What is the upper acceptable oil temperature. With summer temperatures around 95 degrees in Utah and the fan blowing on the cooler and running about 1500 rpm on the highway the oil temp is indicating 220 degrees. Thanks

measured from where on the motor? and driving on the highway at 1500rpm?

1500 RPM on the highway I'd be far more concerned about the CHT

The temperature sensor is back of the block, lower left of the oil pump. By "Highway" I mean two lane back roads leading to off road trails. 1500 rpm in 3rd gear is about 35mph.

well, it certainly won't fry a turkey. you're in good shape.

VWs like high RPMS to stay cool. "Stock" motors are best below 4k and 5k for max cooling, but I bet your stock oil cooler has been removed, I would replace that.

Post pictures of your setup so we can give you specific advise.

Thanks for the responses. The original cooler has been removed and a larger cooler and fan have been mounted in the airsteam. With fan on temp drops to about 200 degrees. Thanks again.

The stock oil cooler in the fan housing (non standback/doghouse) is actually use to direct the cooling air to the correct places for #3 and 4 side of engine.
Removing it can cause problems with having higher temps on that side of engine.

1500 rpm on what highway? Really.
Ideal cooling RPM is like 2800 ~ 3400.

So i just did about 2500 in third @ 35mph, how big are the tires?
What type of transmission?

Does your fan shroud look like this:
