I went to start my 63 bug yesterday, and smoke came out of the key slot. Any ideas???

Switch body is grounded, wires into it are not. You may have an accumulation of gunk allowing a short, but more likely the phenolic bit that holds the copper contacts has cracked.

Replace the switch.

This very thing just happened to me in my '63 Ghia. Exactly as Harley said, there was gunk between the contacts and it shorted out and cooked the bakelite innards.

If you want to replace the switch but keep your key profile, get yourself an old used switch and transfer some guts as in this form post: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2...p;start=20
