View original topic: Trying to decide on Trans type 1 or 002

I have both a stock 70 type1 or a 002 trans and I m trying to decide which one to use. I was planning in running 31/10.50s maybe 33s. I want it to be street friendly and off road capable. My biggest concern is the gear ratio on the 002 might be just to much for street use.

You can get a built 113 that can handle l large tires or use the 002 and rev high on the freeway. If its mostly street, I would say 113. But with 33's, 002.

When I had my 002 with 30" tires, I was pushing close to 4000 RPM at 70 MPH. Hope that gives you an idea. Off road was great though.

Thanks for the feedback, real world experience from people who have been there done that is what I was looking for.

Another option is a trans out of a thing. AV code mine has 4.12 and 31 x 10.5 rears. At 3200 rpm I'm doing 68 according to the gps.

Single side plate Type 1 has 3.88 ring & pinion. 69-72 double side plate including your 1970 has 4.12. Swingaxle 68 have 4.12. Swingaxle 61-67 have 4.37. You can buy other ratios. But the 002 is a far stronger trans all around. IF breaking the trans is an issue, then the 002 is worth it. Otherwise, stick to the T1.

I have two set up like this, one is a spare I raced class 5/1600 on. Running a 8 bolt 4:37 with close ratio 3rd and 4th T1 Single side plate IRS in my Baja prerunner with 29" Mickey Thompson Baja's for a long time with a 2332 dual 44idf in it. No problem off road or on the freeway with it will easily pull 90+ at 4k. I am not drag racing it or going crazy with it off road but it has lasted.

i have a single side cover AT with no reverse and i bought an unknown condition AH double side cover the other day for 125 bucks.

currently there is 31's on the back and they are like new. im going to street this and drive it as much as possible. should i fix the AT or install the AH (assuming its good)

im looking for decent speed of course on road without a screaming engine.

ive been watching youtube videos reading the transmission topic here.. im pretty confused actually
