I have an 1835 that I am considering rebuilding as a small stroker for a 65 bus project. It currently has a 044 heads, and a crane cam 282, which has the following specs:

Part number - 760-0014
Grind number - VW-282 w/gear
Valve Setting; Intake 0.004" Exhaust 0.006" cold
Total lift @ cam 0.0360" @valve 0.407" Rocker arm ratio 1.13:1
Advertised Duration 282* Duration @0.050" 240*
Cam Timing @ 0.050" intake opens 19*BTDC/closes 41*ABDC/max lift 101*ATDC
Cam Timing @ 0.050" exhaust opens 51*BBDC/closes 9*ATDC/max lift 111*BTDC

My thoughts are to split the case, add a 74mm crank, and thick wall 92 cylinders. I have 36mm Dellorto's, currently with 30mm vents, and 32 vents on the shelf. My question comes to cam and head choice. I have some nice stock ported heads, or these 044 40x35 heads. Which would do better for a bus, and is there a better cam choice? I haven't driven a bus for quite a while, and have never built a motor for one, so I figure best to ask the experts.
FWIW, I have the 74 DPR crank already, so I might as well use it right?

Get ready for the 2276+ drum beaters...

Are your 92's already thick wall? If not, and you don't want to machine the case, consider 90.5 to get some cylinder thickness back.

I would use the 92 thick wall that only machine the heads for the 94 size.
And I'd like to keep it smallish, around 2 liters, so I can maybe use the carbs and heads I have. Not really wanting to go with a 78 or 82 cranks for this, just a simple build.

Sounds like that engine will run quietly with that cam.

You could also use one of those offset ground 71-73mm Chevy journal cranks from DPR or DMS to keep your engine narrow.

I was looking at the Webcams 119, 218, and they have a 119/218 grind also. Not sure how any of these cams would do with my proposed combo though. I'd like something that can keep up with city traffic, pushing a bus, probably loaded with wife, kids, german shepherd, and kayaks. My goal is low end torque, with as broad a power band as possible. The ported stock heads seem like they would keep air velocity up, so it's nice and crisp off idle. Unless they're too small for 74 x 92, this is where I need help.
