Hey everyone,
Hopefully i've got this in the correct place, if not my apologies.
Here's the story:
I have a 69 bug that is going to be setup for probably 80% track 20% drive on the street to show off. I started saving money to get a cage and paint and should at this point have enough to start the process.
The issue is i'm not sure which to start first. Looking for anyone who has maybe been down the same road that can offer advise on what routes they took.
I plan to get the RLR weld in cage. My fear is once the cage is in I wont be able to put a headliner in the car. Don't want to put the headliner in before I paint it. At the same time I figured if the cage was in the car when i had it painted they could spray the cage to match.
1. Cage -> Paint -> Headliner
2. Paint -> Headliner -> Cage
3. Headliner -> Cage -> Paint
Any opinions would be great. I might just be over thinking it. Let me know! |

Think of this way, do you want any welding splatter on a new paint job and headliner. Put the cage in first along with any other fabrication. Paint the car.
You should be able to tuck the headliner in last. |

This is a difficult task... But this may help:
I have a painted turret interior (no headliner) in one of my cars; I had the cage built and painted it first (no masking - overspray was free to land on the turret) then used kitchen wrap to wrap/mask the cage and painted the turret around it |

I understand it's an old post, but I have the same question.
Have you completed your project, and how did you do ... paint then cage then headliner ?

k-weaver is still welding on his in 2018.
VWCOOL hasn't even checked in here since 2017!
DWP has the only sensible strategy, so get to work on the welding first.
It's your engineering project to build as you see fit! 8)
