View original topic: How to remove bolt through handbrake
Johnny vw1967 Thu Aug 21, 2014 10:32 am

Hello

Can anyone give me a good idea for how to remove the handbrake.
The bolt is rusted, so I can't get it out of the handbrake.
I have tried with different chemicals, an also tried heating the handbrake.

I need to get the handbrake out to replace the floor. It's a 67 panel.

hopefully someone can give me som good advice.

Best regrads

At least on my 1960 that's actually a 10-12mm diameter 'pin' with grooves at either end for a small snap ring.

If everything had been perfect, I would have removed one of the snap rings and used a drift to tap out the pin. Heh heh. Yeah.

The rust was so complete with mine that I followed advice from here others offered as last resort…

If you can't press it out or bang it out, about all that's left is cutting the pin into three pieces by hacksawing it on either side of the handbrake lever.

Or you might be able to get a very thin cut-off wheel or a Dremel in there.

I would find a new pin before you destroy/cutout the old one. There was a guy who made replacements with a grease fitting on them also, on Samba

Consider yourself lucky if the metal adjacent to the handbrake on yours is still in good shape.

The pin? Years ago, when I was restoring my 1958 camper, I removed the metal cage that the lever fits in. Once it was out, I could remove the pin. After that, the cage just has to be welded to the floor.

Jeremyrockjock right here on The Samba sell new pins with zerk fitting for 15 bucks shipped.

You will probably need to cut the pin into 3 pieces; I like to use a good quality hack-saw blade to make the cuts.

You can then heat the e-brake handle and hammer the rest of the pin out.

Hello again...
Thank's for all your advice..... I had to follow your advice, and cut in in 3 pieces. It was no way to get it out in one piece.
Have sent Jeremyrockjock an email...so hopefully I can buy a new one..

Thanks again..

Johnny
